smartd problems

I think this line says it all:

Dec 19 17:24:30 mach2 smartd[18726]: Device: /dev/sda, Bad IEC (SMART)
mode  page, err=-5, skip device

My suggestion is to check with your hard drive manufacturer to make sure
that the drive actually supports SMART, or if you have to do something to
enable it, either at the drive or BIOS level of your system.
