Faster 'du' command

One way around this is to use the quota system to keep a running tally.
setup quotas (e.g. http://www.siliconvalleyccie.com/linux-adv/quota.htm) and
use "repquota" to see what each person is using.
You can leave the users set to 0 quota (no quota) and still benefit from the
report.
