Sound recorder in RH9

I'm trying to run Sound Recorder in RH9, with a mic connected to the
sound-card (known to be working). However, I can't get it to work at all
- when I select 'record' it does nothing - the file status bar doesn't
move at all, although it says 'recording'. According to the Help, I
should be able to configure Sound Recorder by selecting
Edit->Preferences, but there's no Edit on the navigation bar! Any ideas
please?
