sendmail startup slow

[marty at BANYAN ~]$ which host
/usr/bin/host
[marty at BANYAN ~]$ host mit.edu
mit.edu has address 18.7.22.69
[marty at BANYAN ~]$ host 18.7.22.69
69.22.7.18.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer WEB.MIT.EDU.
[marty at BANYAN ~]$

Happened well within a second. FWIW this box is my LAN gateway.
