You are correct. This was the problem - the network ports in the back are
switched: 2 is eth0 and 1 is eth1! I had figured it out before your email,
but I appreciate your response --- I discovered the solution by accident.

We also are having troubling with the PowerEdge 1950 and Linux (we are
using FC5). There is
something wrong with the ordering of the network cards. The card that
is labeled Nic 1 on the back is actually eth1 in Linux and Nic 2 is
eth0.

This is a really annoying problem, because we are running Xen and this
causes even more problems and confusion. After starting Xend,
networking does not work anymore. But if we manually reassign the
adapters like this:
brctl delif xenbr0 vif0.0
brctl delif xenbr1 vif0.1
brctl addif xenbr0 vif0.1
brctl addif xenbr1 vif0.0
networking works again. It is like eth0 and eth1 are assigned reverse,
while vif0.0 and vif0.1 are assigned the way you would expect.

The Mac adresses are also getting switched, check the mac adresses in
the BIOS and then check in Linux. All very confusing, but we are not
sure if this a Linux issue our is a bug in the BIOS. If you are not
running Xen this may not be a big issue for you (just plug the cable
for eth0 in Nic 2).
