Old kernel version in use even after upgrade. Please suggest.

Red Hat has never supported this.  RHEL AS does not ship with yum and
doesn't use yum for updates.

For starters, use up2date - it does what it's supposed to do.  To fix
the current situation, edit /etc/grub.conf and change the default kernel
entry.
