Jay,
Your solution worked !!!
Running modprobe st and then modprobe mptscsih got the device to show up
in /proc/scsi/scsi

Thanks everyone for your help.

We always have to load the drivers explicitly upon boot by putting them
in /etc/rc.local for our adaptec SCSI card with a Quantum drive. Maybe
use some variation of below ...?

modprobe st
modprobe aic79xx
chmod 666 /dev/*st*

Subject: Problem with sdlt drive

I'm having trouble getting a redhat 3 ES server to load the driver for a
compaq sdlt 320 drive. I know that the drive works fine. The drive is
using scsi ID 6, the bios sees and correctly identifies the drive. This
box also has an hba card installed and working properly. Here is the
contents of /proc/scsi/scsi cat /proc/scsi/scsi Attached devices:
Host: scsi0 Channel: 00 Id: 00 Lun: 00
  Vendor: COMPAQ Model: HSV110 (C)COMPAQ Rev: 3010
Type: Unknown ANSI SCSI revision: 02
Host: scsi0 Channel: 00 Id: 00 Lun: 01
  Vendor: COMPAQ Model: HSV110 (C)COMPAQ Rev: 2001
Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02
Host: scsi0 Channel: 00 Id: 01 Lun: 00
  Vendor: COMPAQ Model: HSV110 (C)COMPAQ Rev: 3010
Type: Unknown ANSI SCSI revision: 02

Any ideas? Thanks very much.
