redhat crash at logout

My linuxbox with RH 4 EP (kernel 2.6.9-34.EL  i686) crash at the logout
don't permit the login of another account because the graphical interface
is blocked. In the log file the last message is
init: open (/dev/pts/0): no such file or directory
The only way to work is the reboot machine.
Could someone help me?
Any suggestion is appreciated.
