32 vs 64 bit development question

I've a situation where someone has the intention of setting up a redhat
server to run in 64 bit mode, running oracle 10 in 64 bit more.

However, some of the applications they've asked to be compiled for the
system won't be using large quantities of disk or memory.

Are there articles available that discuss this "split personality" of a
server - the fact that it needs to run in 64 bit mode for the main
application, but the applications don't need to run in 64 bit mode? If
it is better to go ahead and just build the apps in 64 bit mode, then
are there some articles to read to help towards that goal?

Thanks for your help!
