How to check NTP work or not?

We have several DELL servers with Redhat AS 3.X and
4.X installed on it.  Every time I reboot servers I
saw :
 
   NTPD    ---  fail

I can ping NTP server from DELL servers without
problem.  Does anyone can help me on follwing:

1. How to check my server actually use NTP time or
local machine time?

2. where is NTP log file?
