up2date failing

I am running up2date on a system and after analysis, up2date returns a
message that 'the following packages were added to satisfy
dependancies', but then immediately after that it lists all of the
packages as already being installed.

do I have a munged rpm registry or something?

any pointers on how to resolve it?
