Segmentation fault

Php is a 32 bit application and requires 32bit libraries.

Lessee, I assume you follow that with make and make install. It sounds to me, and this is just a guess, that the compile might be defaulting to 32 bit, and you might need some extra switches. I see that gcc has -mpowerpc64, for example.
