cron scripts for maintenance

Oh yes, I know about everything that Red Hat includes, how it works, etc.,
which is very, very little. Hence, my email to everyone. I'm looking for
something that is comparable to the massive FreeBSD's scripts that are
provided upon default install.

All recent Redhat varieties include a logwatch package, which by default
sends one email per day to root.  That works pretty well for one machine,
until you start adding your own logging applications (at which point you'd
need to also add your own logwatch services to report on your apps' logs),
but it doesn't scale well for multiple systems.
Redhat also installs logrotate with a sensible default configuration, so
your logs won't grow out of control.

You didn't go into specifics about the functions you're looking for, but I
assume they do more than just deal with logs.  Perhaps cfengine would be of
interest.  Personally I use:

	- a modified logwatch for log reporting
	- logrotate for log handling
	- nagios for network/host monitoring
	- a home-grown system for reporting changed config files
		- the same system archives them, and also watches cisco
switch/router configs
	- a home-grown system for collecting key disaster recovery files
nightly and archiving them.
	- home grown scripts for tracking the success of backup jobs.
