USB devices on RHES 5.1 not detected

insert it and type dmesg that will give you an insight into what the
system is working on. It may be as simple as having the auto media
stuff off or it may be more complex. In either case dmesg will tell you
what the kernel sees, from there making userspace behave is simpler.
