A collegue here suggested powerimg down ,
pulling out and in the power cables ,
and powering it up....

Someone installed vmware on this system , and if I put the install cd in
the cdrom drive it simply ignores it.

Does anyone have any experience with this odd behavior ?

Shutdown the vmware client machine. It is probably grabbing focus of the
install CD/DVD.
