Is there a reason you're not using RHN to pull packages? 5.0.45 is provided by RHN and would only require a yum install mysql-server. Far less headaches than you've apparently gone through.

Everyone,

Turns out that the mysql package available from mysql.com for rhel5 doesn't
really work out of the box. I removed this package, and downloaded the one
available from rpmbone.net...and things went off smoothly.

Thank you,
