network manager and avahi

Chaps,

What's the difference between NetworkManager and avahi? Am I right in
thinking that the latter is mainly for mobile devices in that it
automatically sets you up with dhcp and stuff when you go to a new
location? Can a server/laptop's general networking still function
without nm? Once upon a time it was ifup this and ifdown that ;-)
