Now, about your  vm, does it have the resource file
immediately below?

/sys/devices/system/clocksource/clocksource0/current_clocksource

And if so, what do you get when you do:
cat /sys/devices/system/clocksource/clocksource0/current_clocksource

Depending on your output, you might want to replace the value with
another one from those listed in:

cat /sys/devices/system/clocksource/clocksource0/available_clocksource
