Connection monitoring

Thank you Vincent for you suggestions.
Unfortunately the ping solution is hard to monitor and to assess.
On the other hand I already installed Nagios but it is designed to probe
from time to time the hosts not to continually ping them. I lowered the
check interval to 5 seconds but still there might be problems that
escape and given the fact that I am balancing between two databases if
only one packet doesn't arrive to the destination the db get out of sync
and I am stuck with the same problem.
I am looking for something like a mrtg graphic that will signal eventual
problems.
