how to add a user special persmiison to a folder

i both tried these (john is noy my actual username)

setfacl -m u:john :rwx folder
setfacl -m u:john :rwx ./folder
setfacl -m u:john :w  folder
setfacl -m u:john :w ./folder

but  i get below errors
setfactl:  ./cp Operation not supported
setfactl:  cp Operation not supported
