Not working

This is the way it worked:
# umount /dev/mapper/VolGroup00-LogVol06

# lvextend -L+3G /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol06

# e2fsck -f /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol06

# resize2fs /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol06
 
# mount /dev/mapper/VolGroup00-LogVol06 /usr/local

You also needs to run these two commands
Unmount  the partitions. 
e2fsck -f /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol06
resize2fs /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol06
