I discovered that the rpm database may not be working correctly.

"rpm -qa kernel" brings back nothing

rpm -qa | grep kernel
kernel-xen-2.6.18-128.1.6.el5
kernel-xen-devel-2.6.18-128.1.1.el5
kernel-xen-2.6.18-128.4.1.el5
kernel-xen-devel-2.6.18-128.1.6.el5
kernel-xen-2.6.18-128.1.1.el5
kernel-xen-devel-2.6.18-128.4.1.el5
kernel-headers-2.6.18-128.4.1.el5

the /usr/src and /lib/modules for the kernel are on the system.
