I think you'll find that when it comes to configuring things that are
slightly out of the ordinary pretty much any MTA is easier to configure than
sendmail.

While sendmail can be very powerful in that it will do pretty much anything,
having to deal with m4 and sendmail.cf can very easily turn nightmarish.

And yeah - as you say, the legacy bugs and holes have long since been
patched. To say otherwise is similar to recommending users not run bind
because there were exploits for it back in bind4 that allowed attackers to
gain root access.
