autofs v4 and /net on rhel4

I am working with autofs4 on rhel4 machines and running into a bit of trouble.

Standard automounts work as expected but when I use the auto.net
config, I am noticing some strange behaviour.

For instance, if I have /data exported from server1 and access it from
client1, the first time the mount fails.

ex:

ls /net/server1/data/somefile < will fail the first time

Immediately afterwards and thereon, if I do it again, the file is found.

If I unmount /net/server1/data/ and do it all again, same result,
first lookup fails, the rest are fine.

I've tried updating autofs, nfs-utils, nfs-utils-lib and even the kernel

Also, I am getting lookup errors in syslog about showmount compaining
that it's failing to lookup the name server/data which is right since
that's not the name for the server. Is there a better auto.net someone
has squirrelled away or am I simply doing something wrong. Is this
just normal?

Thanks
