System only boots to read-only

You'll need to google, to find on the Nvidia website, what driver works
for what video card. Certainly, I think I've got at least one or two
systems with old video cards that I have to use *only* the one old
proprietary driver installer - newer ones ->will not work<-.

Suggestion: easy test, rather that init 5, is startx. That may also give
you more clues as to what's wrong.
