No offense but whats keeping you from making a server and just try it.

And if you dont have a server try is with a virtual server on youre
desktop.

My advice would be install 5.4 and try to migrate the data not upgrade.

 

Youre email suggests (i have not done any research and this mailing list
must give me a workable solution)

Sorry if you realy thought this try a different OS like windows.
