Several, network-wide object systems require a domain context.
The localdomain is very much required, just like linklocal isn't
optional (and absolutely required in the IPv6 world) -- similar
contexts at work there too.

Never an issue for sed, Perl and other tools I use.
And one can always use external tools that do the lookup from it.

Bugzilla is your friend.  Virtually every decision is explained in there.

For over the last decade, I was often labeled a "Red Hat apologist"
merely because I explained things directly from Bugzilla, and showed
what happens first-hand when you do it otherwise.

Not coincidentally Fedora/RHEL continues to implement practices that
are adopted by other distros, at least the ones used on large networks.
