To be fair I think Sistina was looking at HP-UX LVM when they created 
Linux LVM.
 From what I can find Linux LVM development was started in 1998 (v1.0 
released in 2000) and Digital UNIX dropped LVM with the 4.0B release in 
1996.

HP-UX LVM is still supported and looks pretty much identical to Linux LVM.
