Just to add (tho might be out of topic a bit) U can use RHEV (which is based on KVM) and setup different virtualization clusters of AMD and Intel so they only migrate towards each other.

Just my 2 cent..
Hello,

In RHEL6 beta virtualization document
(http://docs.redhat.com/docs/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/6/html/Virtualization/sect-Virtualization-Virtualization_limitations-KVM_limitations.html)
it is written that "Live migration is only possible with CPUs from the
same vendor (that is, Intel to Intel or AMD to AMD only).

But in KVM Wiki (http://www.linux-kvm.org/page/Migration) I see that
"You can migrate a guest between an AMD host to an Intel host and
back".

What could be the state of this in RHEL6 final? It is somewhat
important for us because now we have Intel/AMD mix for RHEL5 Xen hosts
and need to plan several more servers for virtualization.
I understand that I will be able to use RHEL5 Xen as hosts for quite
some time still. But since many things improved during those years I
would like to move to new platform when it's ready. Not production
boxes on day-0 of course. :)
Just asked internally, and got this info:

Cross vendor migration is not supported neither for kvm or xen.

It can work in theory but it's not complete. Also the extra
flexibility cost performance since the virtualized cpu needs to be
[the] least common denominator.

For these reasons it's out of RHEL for the foreseen future.
Keep enjoying Xen and hope you'll try out kvm soon as well.

Thanks,
Dor

Safest bet looks to be sticking with the same CPU Vendor where you
need to do migration.

Hopefully that helps. :)

Regards and best wishes,
