Afaik - please correct me if I'm wrong - it's irrelevant for the guest's
performance because you are not using real hardware.

Why do you says this?? It is totally relevant for this guest can works
on 1GB ethernet.

Have you tested it?
For example the virtio_net driver does not even give you information
about the (virtual) ethernet speed - at least on rhel5 here.

Yes I have tested using RHEL6 guest with virtio_net and performance is very close (not equal, of course) to a real 1GB network.

On this guest is imperative to use 1GB nic driver, I can't work with a 10MB nic driver like pcnet or ne2k_pci or rtl8139 ...
