Presumably I don't have to remind you to save a copy of /var/lib/rpm ...

Try
	rm -f /var/lib/rpm/__db*
first.

If that doesn't fix, make an entry at http://bugzilla.redhat.com and
attach the output of
	strace -o /tmp/xxx -f rpm --rebuilddb
and I might be able to guess what's boogered.
