This box used to run RH 9, and I've got ESv3 installed on there now, but v4 keeps coming up with 'No hard drives have been found' and so the installation becomes useless (why it even continues to the next step, I don't know). I've opened a ticket with RedHat but it isn't going anywhere useful, not yet at least. I tried making an Adaptec driver disk, but that didn't work (apparently RH uses a different i2o driver now, so the RH3 driver from Adaptec won't work (how nice)). The last thing I got from RedHat was that my controller isn't supported, and I find it hard to believe that they /removed/ support from a RAID controller in the new version of the driver (but maybe they did...). I'm open to any and all suggestions that might move my RH4 installation forward... This makes sense. EL3 runs a 2.4.x series kernel while EL4 uses 2.6.x. There is no way that driver disk would work. Now... from what I was able to dig up: The ASR-2005S has been broken in I2O since 2.6 was released. Only recently has there been a patch to fix this. It is likely that RedHat has not included this driver for stability reasons as it was a fairly recent patch in relation to the time EL4 was frozen. http://natasha.stmarytx.edu/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/testing/ChangeLog-2.6.8-rc1 Search for '2005S'. I wouldn't count on being able to install EL4 on the volume hosted by that controller. You should either stick with EL3 or you could go through the rather hairy process of rebuilding the installer image with the kernel image and initrd you need. Though... I could be wrong. -Brian On Tue, 2005-07-05 at 15:08 -0500, Matt Allen wrote: > Howdy, > > I'm trying to install RHEL ESv4 on a 1U SuperMicro server that uses a > 0-channel Adaptect 2005S as the RAID controller. First off, when the installation asks to check the install media, the checks always fail. When I do the check on a different system I get straight passes. RHEL 3 had no problem. Second, usually when I boot the system (from CD or hard drive) I have to unplug the keyboard and plug it back in a few times to get any keyboard input working. I just tried logging into the installed OS and the keyboard input was either in all caps (without CAPS LOCK on) or resulted in "2", "'", and "~" characters, among others. Sometimes rebooting helps. Finally, the system refuses to reboot. When I tell it to reboot it goes through a normal shutdown sequence and the screen goes black but it never actually restarts. I'm forced to hold down the power button to get it to shut off. Has anyone experienced something like this? It's very odd and I'm at a loss of where to start. I've looked in the BIOS and AFAIK there isn't anything wrong. I'm also pretty sure I didn't tell it to install X, though it boots into it by default now. That could be negligence on my part, though. Shouldn't I be able to take their config file and their source WITHOUT MAKING ANY CHANGES and build the EXACT SAME KERNEL? I start from scratch by copying /usr/src/linux-2.4.21-32.0.1.EL to another directory and doing my work there. To get the links I copy the config file from the configs dir within the kernel to .config. This file is EXACTLY the same as the /boot//boot/config-2.4.21-32.EL file. I poke the save and quit button on the tcl/tk window and then on the "make dep" warning popup. NOW THE .config file IS DIFFERENT THAN WHAT I COPIED! I type make dep and then make bzImage and get the messages below. I have just one question. Why does Redhat distribute code and configs that DO NOT WORK? Next I go to make xconfig again and remove the ah and esp from "network options" for both ipv4 and ipv6. There have been numerous bugzilla reports about that failing in the exact way you experienced here. Try make oldconfig to rebuild the default or make config (I think I recall make menuconfig also worked for me) to configure a new kernel instead. Thanks very much for any input. Just type vncserver. You will be prompted for a password you will need to use to connect. A .vnc directory will be created. You will probably want to edit .vnc/xstartup. It has directions in there on how to get a full desktop. You can get the M$ windows client from www.tightvnc.com. I use putty and route vnc through ssh for security reasons. In fact, if your server firewall will let it through you should just be able to use a web browser and go to URL http://myserver.mydomain:5801 . If you used "vncserver :33" to start it up this would be http: //myserver.mydomain:5833. /usr/bin/vncserver is a script that just runs Xvnc. Xvnc is based on the XFree86 version of Xserver so all the options that work for XFree86 should work for Xvnc. See "man Xserver".
