If you press F1 on boot to go into BIOS, you might

(1) check to see if Hyperthreading is enabled - I couldn't get my RHEL to
work with it off (disabled), similar problems to what you describe.

(2) After Pressing F1, go into the system and post logs, and check for
error codes.

(3) Instead of pressing F1, try pressing F2, and go into the on-board
diagnostics. the memory tests take a while, but otherwise it is fairly
reasonable.

(4) Do you have a RAID adapter in it && also don't have one of those
otherwise fairly ubiquitous large plastic info panels on the INSIDE of the
top metal cover. There have been problems where the cover shorts out some
of the contacts on the RAID adapter.
Some plastic and Duct tape usually fixes it.

Good luck!

Hello,

I've got an IBM eServer series x330 server that upon which I'm installing
RHEL 4 Update 1. First off, when the installation asks to check the
install media, the checks always fail. When I do the check on a different

system I get straight passes. RHEL 3 had no problem.

Second, usually when I boot the system (from CD or hard drive) I have to
unplug the keyboard and plug it back in a few times to get any keyboard
input working. I just tried logging into the installed OS and the
keyboard input was either in all caps (without CAPS LOCK on) or resulted
in "2", "'", and "~" characters, among others. Sometimes rebooting helps.

Finally, the system refuses to reboot. When I tell it to reboot it goes
through a normal shutdown sequence and the screen goes black but it never
actually restarts. I'm forced to hold down the power button to get it to
shut off.

Has anyone experienced something like this? It's very odd and I'm at a
loss of where to start. I've looked in the BIOS and AFAIK there isn't
anything wrong.

I'm also pretty sure I didn't tell it to install X, though it boots into
it by default now. That could be negligence on my part, though.

Thanks very much for any input.

Justin
