[rhn-users] Sendmail ignoring(?) /etc/nsswitch.conf

Howdy,
I'm running a rhel 3 update 4 linux system and am trying to get
sendmail to "obey" /etc/nsswitch.conf. Sendmail insists on using dns
to resolve a host who is out of service (ping just sits there).
nsswitch.conf has "hosts: files dns" in it. Any service who uses
gethostbyname() seems to go directly to dns.
Does anyone have any clues as to where to look?
Regards and thanks for the help,
George...
