Hi,
Sounds like the problem that reoccurs every now and then in this list ...
In short, if you don't use DNS ( and it seems you don't, because you mention
the hosts file ), then you have to specify your SMART-HOST between brackets
[] like [foo.com] in the /etc/mail/sendmail.mc file + 'make' again.
You also have to create the file /etc/mail/service.switch with this in it :
hosts files
aliases files
