[rhn-users] no sound with i810 audio module

I have Red Hat Enterprise Linux V3 on my dell 370n workstation and
recently upgraded my kernel from 2.4.21-27.0.2.EL to 2.4.21-27.0.4.EL.
Big mistake. A lot of things stopped working correctly. I managed to
fix most everything except the sound. When I do an lsmod, I get:

Module Size Used by Tainted: PF
i810_audio             28824   1  (autoclean)
ac97_codec             16840   0  (autoclean) [i810_audio]
soundcore               6436     2  (autoclean) [i810_audio]

My /etc/modules.conf has a few lines that look like this:

alias sound-slot-0 i810_audio
post-install sound-slot-0 /bin/aumix-minimal -f /etc/.aumixrc -L
>/dev/null 2>&1 || :
pre-remove sound-slot-0 /bin/aumix-minimal -f /etc/.aumixrc -S
>/dev/null 2>&1 || :

and sndconfig detects the device and does not produce any errors.
However, I still don't hear the test sound or sound from CD's even when
the volume is all the way up. When I do an insmod --probe i810_audio,
it returns:

Using /lib/modules/2.4.21-27.0.4.EL/kernel/drivers/sound/i810_audio.o
insmod: a module named i810_audio already exists

It used to work fine under the old kernel. What gives? Does anyone
have any ideas?
