Is there any way to do this in more "normal" fashion (and much easier) with up2date? Info contained here: http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/RHNetwork/ref-guide/3.4/s1-sm-channels-packages.html#S2-SM-CHANNEL-LIST would seem to suggest that there isn't: " A system must be subscribed to one base channel only. Also I am not sure if this has happened after I have selected "relabel on next reboot" under "Security Level" -> "SE Linux", but each time I try for example "service tomcat stop" I get a prompt: "Shutting down Tomcat Your default context is user_u:system_r:unconfined_t. This is not the configuration in the RH4 System Admin or Security Guide but is closer to the configuration in the IPSec Howto Guilde. Red WKS ---> Red VPN NIC , Black VPN NIC ---> Black Network ----> Black VPN NIC , Red VPN Nic ---> Red WKS The Red and Black VPN NIC are on the same physical box. The Red Network is in the 172.x.x.x. and the black is in the 192.x.x.x. So far that any configuration I try either fails or by-passes the tunnel. Here are my questions: 1. In setkey, if I have not used the -m tunnel on the add command but do use esp/tunnel/IP1-IP2//require on the spdadd, is the Ipsec running is tunnel or esp mode ? 2. When I examine the Black VPN NIC with either ethereal or tcpdump, I see the red IP address, but I am not sure how is it going thru the router. (Linksys 8 port for testing purposes set with the black network). Is Ethereal and TCPdump grabbing the data before it goes into the tunnel ? This didn't seem to be effecting services such as httpd, but atd and crond were also hung. I guess atd and crond try to change to a user context and require login functionality to do that. I've been troubleshooting the problem this weekend, so I stopped some services to get a smaller set of processes that might be causing this problem and rebooted. BigMistake!(tm) - Now the box is hanging at the first prompt, though services like apache seem to have started up. I understand that there is a known bug/condition that is caused by ssh sessions ending and not killing their children, and this seems to be what is happening here. Though I don't understand why it effects the local logins as well. Has anyone seen this problem before and got any ideas on what might be a good line to take in troubleshooting this machine. You could try something like this (don't leave out any tick marks or quote marks): notify ="/usr/sbin/audbin -S /var/log/audit.d/save.%u -C -T 70% -N 'mail -s "audit filling up var alert" user at yada.com'"; If you don't really need all that audit info (it can range from months to years of data) you can change the notify line to the following and it will just rotate through the four 20M log files (default) using a first in - first out process. This is usually enough audit data for most people, but make sure of your own audit log requirements first: notify = "/usr/sbin/audbin -C"; -----Original Message----- From: rhn-users-bounces at redhat.com [mailto:rhn-users-bounces at redhat.com]On Behalf Of caranas at lexmark.com Sent: Sunday, November 13, 2005 8:22 PM To: Red Hat Network Users List Cc: rhn-users at redhat.com; rhn-users-bounces at redhat.com Subject: RE: [rhn-users] RHEL3 box hanging at login Hi Tom, I'm new to Linux. RedHat has an article regarding how to tune your VM - http://www.redhat.com/magazine/001nov04/features/vm/#tuning-vm Does anybody have any experience tuning bdflush? The docs I am reading appear to be contradicting, or atleast they appear that way to me. Basically there are 6 tunable parameters for bdflush ? nfract, ndirty, interval, age_buffer, nfract_sync, & nfract_stop_bdflush. The docs state their definitions to be *nfract* - The percentage of dirty pages in the buffer cache required to activate the bdflush task *ndirty* - The maximum number of dirty pages in the buffer cache to write to disk in each bdflush execution *interval** *- The number of jiffies (10ms periods) to delay between bdflushiterations *age_buffer* - The time for a normal buffer to age before it is considered for flushing back to disk *nfract_sync* - The percentage of dirty pages in the buffer cache required to cause the tasks which are writing pages of memory to begin writing those pages to disk instead *nfract_stop_bdflush* - The percentage of dirty pages in buffer cache required to allow bdflush to return to idle state It then says *Generally, systems that require more free memory for application allocation want to set the **bdflush** values higher (except for the **age_buffer**, which would be moved lower), so that file data is sent to disk more frequently and in greater volume, thus freeing up pages of RAM for application use. This, of course, comes at the expense of CPU cycles because the system processor spends more time moving data to disk and less time running applications. Conversely, systems which are required to perform large amounts of I/O would want to do the opposite to these values, allowing more RAM to be used to cache disk file so that file access is faster.* To me, this ^ looks like the opposite of what the definitions for each parameter state. I would think if I want to allow more RAM to be used for faster disk access than I would want to *INCREASE* all of the parameters ( I am not positive about nfract_stop_bdflush though). Am I reading this wrong because to me it looks like it is contradicting itself. For example, if I want to free up RAM why wouldn't I lower nfract, thus lowering the required amount of dirty pages in the buffer cache before it writes back to disk? Earlier in the article they have an example that states *#bump up the percentage of memory in use to activate bdflush** vm.bdflush="40 500 0 0 500 3000 60 20 0"*** If I take that and compare it to the standard RHEL 3 /proc/sys/vm/bdflush of 50 500 0 0 500 3000 80 50 0 It would seem to me that this would lower the amount of memory in use to activate bdflush. Am I missing something and just completely not understanding this or is this doc and example incorrect? Thanks, Nick -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The effects of this error are that (1) I can no longer "lvremove" the snapshot partitions, because the system says they are in use, but they're really not; and, (2) I can't do tape dumps because the "sync" system call hangs. These can both be fixed by rebooting, but I don't want to be rebooting my server in order to do tape dumps. I have two questions: 1. Should I be reporting this kernel error to anyone? I'm not sure exactually what was broken in that file, but that did the trick. /etc/sysconfig/rhn/up2date I used up2date --configure to make the new one. Something was obviously misconfigured in that file. I recently reinstalled RH3ESup3 on one of our servers in Dallas. This system is running a dual Xeon Intel SE7520JR2 mainboard, with (2) 3.0MHz processors. This system also has two Intel Pro/1000 Gigabit nics onboard. The system is also running an Adaptec 7211C iscsi card accessing an Intel iscsi storage array. When the system was originanlly configured at our office we had configured the two onboard nics with a ###.###.###.100 and ###.###.###.101 on a private class C lan. The ###.###.###.100 nic is the one that is nat'd to the firewall for incoming traffic. The outside world doesn't know about eth1. Once the systems were in place in Dallas, I went in and edited the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts with the new private addresses on that network there and ifconfig -a shows both configured and running properly. One thing to note is I have a duplicate system in Houston, with the same motherboard and o/s that I cannot duplicate the issue. And of further note, if I down eth1 to force the tcpip traffic to only use eth0, I lose my network connection. But what is happening is that if you run an ifconfig -a you see all the incoming traffic on eth0 and all the outgoing traffic on eth1. Even removing both nic devices, rebooting the system , and adding back the nics still produce this odd traffic. The only way we were able to 'trick' tcpip was to disable both of those devices, the configure eth0 only for a ###.###.###.120 IP, and restart the network. Now you see all of the send/receive traffic going in and out the same port. Question is 'Am I totally missing something?' Checking arp, and resetting the dlink gigaswitch did not solve the problem associated with both of those IPs. Any help anyone can shed some light on this weird issue would be appreciated. Message-ID: <3CFEFF6C55FB5C42A6E68E9521D5C43601D0B9BF@PHSXMB9.partners.org> Hi all, I've got a RHEL v3 U6 application server that samba mounts a large filesystem from another RHEL v3 U6 fileserver, and there are files on the fileserver that are >2GB (typically 8gb) but the application server reports them at 18eb (exabytes). After some research, I've learned that there is a filesize limit of 2GB associated with mount.smbfs. If the filesize limit is 2GB, why is it reported as 18eb? Why doesn't it just "top-off" at 2gb? Since this doesn't affect my SuSE boxes (8.2 or 9.3), is this limited to RedHat? And, lastly, is there a fix for this within RHEL v3? RHAS v4 also has a funky way it treats LVM devices. Is there a similar link on command line setup (via dmsetup?) for LVM. I'm used to the old v3 way of creating an LVM set (volgroup and logdevice), but the only way I know how to mount the set is to first reboot, which re-scans the filesystems and magically :-) maps the set to some /dev/volgroup-logdevice (as opposed to the old /dev/volgroup/logdevice). As you all might guess, I'm studying for the RHCE exam. I have RHAS v3 down, but the RHAS v4 has some differences that are hard to study for. I feel sheepish for asking but, does the RHCE cover RHAS v4? I assume it does. Thanks, --Phil Philip Juels wrote: > Thanks for the link. > > Greg Forte wrote: > >> mdadm replaces raidtools.
