[rhn-users] Graphic Card Problems

OK, first off, the DHCP service listed in the services console would be
for a DHCP _server_ (dhcpd), not the client that you need to make this
box get a DHCP address. The program you're looking for is "dhclient".
Try (as root), running /sbin/dhclient (no options). If that doesn't get
you an address, then either there's a problem with the card driver or
there's a problem with the router.

Second, it'd be nearly impossible to get through the install and NOT
have the interface configured for DHCP unless you really tried. Do you
remember if you kept "DHCP" as the method for assigning an address to
the network interface? It's the default. If you kept it, then it
should have "just worked", so there's some other problem.

Third, first you said the NIC was connected to a router, then you said
it was connected to a switch. Which is it? there's a big difference!
If it's a router, you may need to turn on DHCP services on the router.
If it's a switch, then you SHOULD be able to get an IP address from the
cable modem/ISP, but you can only get one at a time, so if there's
another machine already connected to the Internet via the cable modem,
you'll need to unplug it from the network, and probably cycle the power
on the cable modem, because it will have "tied" itself to the other
computer's MAC address. And then you'll need to go out and buy a router
if you want both machines to be able to have Internet access at the same
time (unless you pay your IP for multiple IP addresses, in which case it
should all work with just the switch ... I think. ;-)
