On my machines I change the file /etc/sysconfig/desktop to look like this:
DESKTOP="KDE"
DISPLAYMANAGER="KDE"
and this works for me, KDE remembers the last session, for some reason
GNOME doesn't. I don't remember if you just need the DESKTOP= line, but
the second line gives you the KDE login screen, which I like better than
the GNOME login screen.
