A big thank you to the developers for including the latest (kernel-matching)
gcc package in the last update. It was giving me fits because I installed it
under VMWare and couldn't rebuild the VMWare tools from source since the
kernel was built with a newer version of gcc than was available for install.
Once I got the huge updates, the kernel-matched gcc was installed and I was
able to successfully build the tools. 

 In the future might I request that a kernel *not* be released before the
version-matched tools used to build it are available?
