Can anyone tell me if I can edit the printcap file on RedHat Linux AS 4?

I need to make changes in the printcap file in order to make use of filtering print output.
I have looked on google on how to use filter to format printout and make changes in the printcap
file but Iam advised not to edit the printcap file. So how else can I make filtering work?
