Well, it seems that something actually does happen. I found extracted
files in /usr/src/redhat/SOURCES. They're still  in "tar.gz", i.e.,
not unpacked into directory trees, and  there is no RPM entry for
them, but they're there.

Shouldn't anything that's installed with RPM leave a trace on the RPM
data bases?
