It works great - very fast. nVidia has unified drivers you can download from their website as well, though not necessary. Well, might need them for the network. I am using RHEL4 with a 2.6.9 kernel. under RH7.3 and a 2.4.x kernel I had a /etc/auto.net file with the following entries: dragon -fstype=smbfs,rw,credentials=/opt/ dragonlo,gid=10009,fmask=660,dmask=770 ://10.1.1.223/anyuser sting -fstype=smbfs,rw,credentials=/opt/ stinglo,gid=10009,fmask=660,dmask=770 ://10.1.1.35/Export This worked fine to mount /net/dragon and /net/sting. Upgrading the machine to RHEL4 with a 2.6.9 kernel I can still mount /net/dragon but not /net/sting. The difference between the two machine is that dragon/10.1.1.223is a Mac running MacOS 10.4.x and sting/10.1.1.35 is a WinXP machine. A little more googling yielded that I should replace smbfs to cifs and as a result some of the other option names changed. so now the entry for sting looks like this: sting -fstype=cifs,rw,credentials=/opt/ stinglo,uid=500,gid=10009,file_mode=0660,dir_mode=0770 ://10.1.1.35/ Export but it still is not working. Can someone tell me what is wrong and/or point me to documentation to get this to work. I have a problem with lam-mpi that did not occour on Redhat9 with lam v.6.5.9, but now using RHEL4 with lam v.7.0.6 it does. We use simulation packages (eg. ls-dyna) and work with biprocessor machines. In order to take full advantage of the 64bits architecture and the OS using the mentioned software, we need to run it in parallel mode; thing that would be done by using lam-mpi (the software has been compiled in the purpose of using the lam-mpi on 64bits EM64T architecture by the developers). To use the previous, I need to start the lam-mpi process by issuing the "lamboot" command which should start the mpi process enabling the 2 cpus. Well, issuing the "lamboot" I get the following message: $ lamboot -v LAM 7.0.6/MPI 2 C++/ROMIO - Indiana University n-1<4268> ssi:boot:base:linear: booting n0 (localhost) n-1<4268> ssi:boot:base:linear: finished The above means that the process exited without enabling node1 and therefore it fails the initialization. I guess it could be because lam needs to have a working rsh allowing the user to rsh without producing any kind of output. But even after fiddling with /etc/hosts.equiv, /etc/securetty and .rhosts files, I still get the following: $ rsh redhat2 connect to address 192.168.1.11: Connection refused Trying krb4 rlogin... connect to address 192.168.1.11: Connection refused trying normal rlogin (/usr/bin/rlogin) Last login: Thu May 11 11:22:38 from redhat15 Do you think that disabling the Kerberos4 authentication could solve the problem? If so, how do I do it? I have tried several variations of the network line in the ks.cfg file, but none have worked. I also tried the same thing I tried in RHEL3 with changing the kickstart.py file in the stage2.img as described here: (https://www.redhat.com/archives/kickstart-list/2005-September/msg00072.html) The supposed fix is to edit the file, usr/lib/kistart.py inside the stage2.img, which needs a line commented out dispatch.skipStep("network") ---- > #dispatch.skipStep("network") But this is not working for me now. Has anyone gotten this to work in RHEL4? Are there any other suggestions to get kickstart to prompt for the networking information? Backtracing the problem I narrowed it down to low bandwith to localhost. The test was flood pinging one thousand 64kB packets to localhost and time the command: This is the test: time ping -f -c1000 -s65507 127.0.0.1 On the IBM X260 the test takes about 12 to 15 seconds to complete. That seems unlikely on this machine so I asked my collegaues to run the test on their desktop machines, running Fedora Core 4 and 5 respectively, and they got approximately the same results. I ran the test on my desktop, running Fedora Core 5 and got approximately 50 times better bandwith. The result was about 0.2 to 0.3 seconds. Amazed at this I tested also on an AMD 2000+ running Debian Sarge and the result was about 0.9 seconds to complete. All the tests were performed on almost ilde machines, so it is not caused by load. Pinging the external IP address gives approximately the same result. Pinging those machines from another machines also gives approximately the same result. So the net conclusion is that it takes 12 to 15 seconds to send about 64 MB of data. That is a poor performance for this powerful machine. Does anybody here know a trick or two to improve the bandwith? -- Kindest Regards, Anna Jonna ?rmannsd?ttir, Unix System Aministration, Computing Services, University of Iceland. Can you file a bug report on this and attach a screenshot for better diagnosis of the problem? Use this form: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/enter_bug.cgi?product=Red%20Hat%20Enterprise%20Linux Select version '4', and the component 'xorg-x11.' Finally I got it working. For the interested people, the issue was with the ownership of the home directory for the root account. See below - EARLIER was drwx------ 9 vikas.rawat coe 4096 May 23 14:59 coe - MODIFIED to drwx------ 9 root coe 4096 May 23 15:00 coe This works. Regards, Vikas Here is a clearly defined process from one of my colleagues (Prashant Lal) for doing the same. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---------------------- Host machine: rhythm Remote machine: blrqmail 1. Generate key on host machine. This is for the user id 'lalp', change to the uid you want to create a key for [lalp at rhythm .ssh]$ ssh-keygen -d Generating public/private dsa key pair. Enter file in which to save the key (/home/lalp/.ssh/id_dsa): "press ENTER here" Enter passphrase (empty for no passphrase): "press ENTER here" Enter same passphrase again: "press ENTER here" Your identification has been saved in /home/lalp/.ssh/id_dsa. Your public key has been saved in /home/lalp/.ssh/id_dsa.pub. The key fingerprint is: 2d:c3:13:b8:38:65:dc:f7:cd:a3:d5:80:4e:32:54:93 lalp at rhythm Now your keys are generated. We have not given any passphrase instead we have pressed the enter because to perform the automated scripted operations on the remote machine. 2. Copy the id_dsa.pub file as authorized_keys from the host machine to remote machine (into the home folder of the uid i.e. /home/lalp in this case) [lalp at rhythm .ssh]$ scp /home/lalp/.ssh/id_dsa.pub lalp at blrqmail:/home/lalp/.ssh/authorized_keys CAUTION: This would overwrite your existing file. If you want to add to your file, copy to some other location and append to this. Try this on the host machine [lalp at rhythm .ssh]$ scp /home/lalp/.ssh/id_dsa.pub lalp at blrqmail:/home/lalp/.ssh/lalp.rhythm.id_dsa.pub On the remote machine [lalp at blrqmail .ssh]$ cat lalp.rhythm.id_dsa.pub >> authorized_keys Note: If you are logging into the remote machine for the first time using SSH, you will be asked to save the remote machine's certificate. Please accept and save it. 3. Now check the permision on the remote machine for .ssh and authorized_keys [lalp at blrqmail lalp]$ chmod -R 600 /home/lalp/.ssh [lalp at blrqmail .ssh]$ ls -lrt total 8 -rw-r--r-- 1 lalp lalp 601 May 23 14:29 authorized_keys [lalp at blrqmail .ssh]$ ls -la ../ |grep .ssh drwx------ 2 lalp lalp 4096 May 23 14:30 .ssh [lalp at blrqmail .ssh]$ 4. Log in from the host machine to remote machine [lalp at rhythm .ssh]$ ssh blrqmail [lalp at blrqmail lalp]$ You should be logged in straightaway with out any password. -----Original Message----- From: Sander Steffann [mailto:s.steffann at computel.nl] Sent: Tuesday, May 23, 2006 1:47 PM To: 'Red Hat Network Users List' Subject: RE: [rhn-users] SSH in BatchMode Hello, > I think the directorio must be /etc/.ssh/ NO /etc/ssh/... What do you see when you do: service vncserver status If it shows that it's running, it's probably iptables (firewall) blocking that port. You can add a firewall rule to allow connections to port 5900. For example, to allow incoming connections to port 5900 you might run this: iptables -A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -p tcp --dport 5900 -j ACCEPT Or, to restrict connections to your local network: iptables -A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -s 192.168.1.0/24 -p tcp --dport 5900 -j ACCEPT You can also use the Red Hat configuration GUI "system-config-securitylevel" to setup your basic firewall and configure SELINUX. If "service vncserver status" shows it's not running SELINUX may have issues. I doubt this because it only has targeted policies by default and I don't believe that VNC is one of the targeted applications. To check to see if SELINUX is causing problems check your system logs. A quick go-nogo test is to temporarily disable it with "setenforce 0". Use nmap to see what you're listening for on the outside of your machine: nmap your_hostname_or_ip --Cal Webster On Tue, 2006-05-23 at 12:04, Michael Chien wrote: > Hi all, > > I have installed VNCserver on the server. After doing upgrades, when a user is prompted for keeping the old desktop or changing to the new one, if he chooses keeping the old one, some things stop working. A user can change his choice by deleting .gconf and .gconfd in his home directory. As for user accounts not working, I am guessing there has been a change in PAM or how passwords are encrypted. I got my accounts to work by going into /etc/shadow and manually deleting the password field of each user and the re-entering it in the usual manner. Since Red Hat does a lot of custom GNOME work, I wonder what kind of support they provide for such upgrades (especially with their "Red Hat Desktop") I wonder if similar issues exist for folks upgrading workstations configured to KDE. I have now received this 11 times. It's really my favorite next to Bob Metzger's Out of Office email. :-) To add something constructive here, I have now done several upgrades from ES3 -> 4 and not a single one of them flinched. It's been all smoothe sailing. I can say however that ONLY using packages available via RHN probably played a big part of that. 9 times out of 10 when I assist in recovering failed upgrades for others, the culprit is usually packages that have been added third party. However I will acknowledge that upgrading systems in the whole GNU/Linux world is not nearly as smoothe sailing as say Unix or Winblows. Perhaps it's because the average Linux user tends to be more of a flatten-and-reinstall type mentality and that has trickled down into the upgrade process. I know on my home servers and desktops, when it's time to upgrade (or repair a wild-hair induced boo-boo) I always flatten and reinstall. My name is Chester Cairns (CJ) I have been using Red Hat for a few years now, I enjoy using it imensly I have a issue with Red Hat AS 4 using sata raid I have recently installed AS 4 onto a PC with 1 IDE HD for the install of AS and two sata HD's on a IT8212 controller for data storage. I have configured the controller to use both the sata HD's in a mirrored raid. When I go to do the install of AS, it shows the HD's as two seperate HD's (sda, sdb) I have downloaded the IT8212 driver from the manufacturer and it will not compile and it look like the driver is only for red hat 9.0 and below. Also before installing AS 4 I installed FC 5 on the same machine with the exact same configuration and it picked up the raid device fine. Can any one give me advise on what I should be doing to get it to see the one raid device. Any help would be appreciated. Well, we use LDAP and sudo (re-built with LDAP support) ... but avoid sudo rules using "system" groups, since compat is ugly ... So, if you had copied the /etc/sudoers file, you may want to try creating a group that only exists in NIS, and adding a sudo rule for it. I'm not sure how easy this is on RHEL (eg system-config-*), manual setup will required adding winbind to the passwd and group lines of /etc/nsswitch.conf configuring samba (and some kerberos) and 'net ads join'. Basic ES entitlement only comes with installation support. The rest all come with some type of phone/web support. See the link below for comparison of support entitlements. http://www.redhat.com/rhel/compare/server/ If not: https://bugzilla.redhat.com Create an account, then search for similar bugs. If there is a bug like yours, then add a comment to it. If not, click the "Enter a new bug report" link and fill in the form. Even though I'm managing servers with active entitlements, I usually do a bug report too.
