It sounds like your up2date configuration file was modified to allow the kernel updates to happen. By default up2date is configured to skip kernel updates (via the package skip list. You can view it in the /etc/sysconfig/rhn/up2date configuration file on the system.) This is because kernel updates tend to be disruptive and it's a better practice to perform them manually rather than in an automated fashion. If I plug the cards on a Windows machine, they work fine, so I know it's not the hardware... With this latest distribution (I tried with a earlier one and the card was not even found by kudzu), the card is recognized by kudzu and it is trying to use the "sky2" driver. However, when trying to activate the ethX device, it always says that the device is not present (even though kudzu found it...) Looking on the Internet, I 've seen people recommending the "skge" or the "sk98lin" drivers: I tried all three with no success. The Linux driver distributed with the hardware is *very* old and does not even compile, so there's no point trying to get help from DLink... Anyone knows how I could get a distribution tha actually support this card? Within the ftp/http/nfs location, extract and copy all data from the ISO's into a single directory. On disk 1, go into the /images/pxeboot/ directory. You will see vmlinuz and initrd.img files, copy those to /boot/. Edit your lilo.conf or grub.conf and add a new entry to be able to boot of this kernel (keeping your old entries to boot from if needed). Reboot and select the new kernel, this will start the installation program, you will select network install, point it to the ftp/http/NFS location for the files it needs and proceed. Another way, for automation is with your ftp/http/nfs location, using the above initrd.img and vmlinuz, you can also do kickstart, to automate the process, if so, you can also create a ks.cfg file and add/append that to grub/lilo with a ks= ksdevice=eth0. Since you would have to create a working ks.cfg file first, this is not as easy as the first suggested method. There is also the vnc method of installation of systems, where you pass vnc options and then can make a remote connection to the vnc session to complete the install. Please note that I have not given all specific details, on assumption that you have a good working knowledge of linux to complete this task once pointed in the right direction for possible solutions. I had upgrade (using rpm -ivh) kernel to new kernel (kernel-smp-2.4.20-46.7.legacy), but found that the new kernel didn't contain abi modules and my IQ report server failed. Error message (var/log/messages) report that the server can't locate abi modules (Loading abi-xxxxxx failed) , and I need to revert back to old kernel. I figure out that any kernel above 2.4.20 are not include abi modules any more. Any reason why ? Where can I get ABI modules to patch to new kernel and how to add that to new kernel ? We've moved our network to force PCs to authenticate using NTLMv2 only. The same smb.conf works with SuSe servers but not Red Hat servers. Both systems worked with NTLMv1 and LM. After moving to NTLMv2, we can no longer access Red Hat servers. To successfully access the Red Hat servers, you MUST use the line protocol = lanman2 or else Samba won?t allow the shares to connect. If I put that line in the smb.conf on Red Hat machines, they will connect but errors pop up when synchronizing files from a PC and I can't view files when connecting from a Mac. It appears that the version of Samba on SuSe (v3.0.20b-3.11) allows NTLMv2 properly and the Red Hat version of Samba (v3.0.9-1.3E.10) does not. I followed directions in Michael Jang's RHCE book for mirroring the /home partition. They are as follows: Copy the /home data to /tmp then # unmount /home # fdisk /dev/sda Command (m for help) : t Partition number (1-4) 3 Partition ID (L to list options): FD Command (m for help) : w # fdisk /dev/sdb Command (m for help) : t Partition number (1-4) 4 Partition ID (L to list options): FD Command (m for help) : w I then edit /etc/raidtab and add the following information: raiddev /dev/md0 raid-level 1 nr-raid-disks 2 nr-spare-disk 0 persistent-superblock 1 chunck-size 4 device /dev/sda3 raid-disk 0 device /dev/sdb4 raid-disk 1 I then create the raid and format it: # mkraid -R /dev/md0 (this runs to completion with no errors) # mkfs -j /dev/md0 I then run e2label so I can apply a label to /dev/md0 and use the LABEL=/home entry in /etc/fstab. However, when I reboot it says it can't mount the special device: LABEL=/home no such device, etc. When I log in, I run e2label on /dev/md0 and it isn't found. If I run e2label on either /dev/sda3 or /dev/sdb4 it comes back with /home. If I mount /dev/md0 it mounts fine. I've changed the format command to `mke2fs -j -L /home /dev/md0` thinking it would give me better results but they end up the same. It won't mound /dev/md0 based on the label alone. Here's my situation. I'm trying to bone up on my linux skills so I've got RHEL 3 installed under VMWare. I have it configured to dish out all the installation information via ftp, http and nfs. I then created a second vm. I can successfully perform an NFS installation using this set up. Now I'm trying the ftp method but keep hitting a snag. I have vsftpd running on the source vm and have successfully connected as 'anonymous' from my workstation terminal and moved around the directories. However, when I attempt to run the installation I get the following: Unable to retrieve ftp://192.168.61.130//var/www/pub/RedHat/base/netstg2.img. I'm using the /var/www directory to simplify things for when I attempt to install via http (which, incidentally, gives me the same error right now). Notice there are two slashes between the IP and the directory path. I don't know if this is causing the problem but I'm unable to prevent it from showing up. I have verified that the target vm has a network connection. I set it as a static address and pinged it successfully. The source vm is set up properly; as I said I am able to ftp from my workstation console. Does anyone have any input that might point me in the right direction? The first argument is the "key" (think mount directory, under the "master" mount directory specified in auto.master) and the last argument is the path to the (presumably remote) filesystem. Here's a cifs example (cifs = smb, only newer; cifs is recommended, unless your kernel is so old it's not supported): windows1 -fstype=cifs,credentials=/etc/smbmount.hostname ://hostname/sharename The only "tricy" part is that leading colon. The "credentials" option just gets passed to mount (and then to mount.cifs or mount.smb), it allows you to put the password in a separate file that's readable only by root. If the line above was in "auto.windows" and the line below appeared in auto.master: /windows /etc/auto.windows then the example above would mount the share 'sharename' on host 'hostname' in the directory /windows/windows1, and read the login credentials from the file /etc/smbmount.hostname. TADA! This is all documented in the autofs, mount, and mount.cifs man pages, btw. ;-) Cheers. -g Nirav Modiya wrote: > Hi > Thanks to all for prompt reply.. > yes i am able to mount by 'mount' command with '-t smbfs' option > But i want to mount it by "automount" facility..As u know there is > automounter daemon > which is continuously running and mount filesystem automatically which > is specified in > /etc/auto.misc ..i want to do same thing for windows share directory.. > > plz help me to solve this problem > Thanking you > > with regards > Nirav > > > On 10/31/06, *Anirudha Sonar* > wrote: > > There is one more way to mount it when system come up , You can make > the entry in /etc/rc.local (command which you use to mount the win > partition in linux box) .
