It sounds like your up2date configuration file was modified to allow the 
kernel updates to happen.

By default up2date is configured to skip kernel updates (via the package 
skip list. You can view it in the /etc/sysconfig/rhn/up2date 
configuration file on the system.) This is because kernel updates tend 
to be disruptive and it's a better practice to perform them manually 
rather than in an automated fashion.
