Sorry about taking so long to respond to this ... as a first comment I'd say it is probably a bit risky to apply errata automatically to a server. I would turn that off except perhaps on desktops or other systems where if something went wrong it wouldn't be critical. To be honest our experience with the auto errata update facility has been inconsistent with it often not working as expected. At this point I would not rely on it even if it were what I wanted to accomplish. On systems older than RHEL5 running "up2date -u" (or something similar modified to taste) from cron once a day is more reliable. On RHEL5 systems yum-updatesd can be configured to apply errata automatically as well regardless of this setting on RHN. > - what is the relationship between rhnsd and up2date? up2date --list does > show the whole long list of pending updates. it seems rhnsd is not running > off the same list, or just picks a tiny fraction of it. rhnsd checks in with RHN periodically. If it finds actions scheduled on RHN (errata or other scheduled actions) if should fire off rhn_check to pick them up and apply them. Generally if you don't schedule actions on RHN to be picked up automatically I don't see any reason to run rhnsd. It sounds like some of the errata failed to get scheduled. This is not an unusual outcome for us and is why I don't recommend relying on this mechanism to keep your systems up to date. If at this point you have a large number of updates to be applied I think mass updates generally go smoother if you apply them in smaller hunks. So I wouldn't do an "up2date -u" to try to get them all in one pass. Going to RHN and scheduling them all followed by running rhn_check on the system tends to work better in this sort of situation. It will pick up and apply the updates in smaller chunks (one errata at a time plus dependencies pulled in) leading to fewer dependency and other problems. My experience may differ from that of others here. Hope this helps. It has a copy of all of the content from the old wiki. When it is available again I'll post details on how to access it on our wiki. If there is a script or something you would like from the svn repo but you don't have a copy of it, do let me know and I will can try to get a copy to you while svn remains down. I tried to register RHEL4 on several servers by using 'up2date --register' and get always such screens: 1: Sending Profile to Red Hat Network 20% After a ~25 seconds: screen hang and shows me the following error message: 2: Fatal Error Problem registering system: Internal Server Error Thank you for your quick answer! If not please point me to the right list. I'm running Red Hat Enterprise 5 Desktop edition. I have a need for the gc++ compiler, but can't seem to find it. I have added the development packages and have GNU C compiler (gcc-4.1.2-14.el2), but can not find the GNU C++ compiler. Is there an RPM that contains the C++ compiler or must I download the source and built it myself? Thanks for your time and sorry if slightly (or greatly) off topic. I am planning to upgrade that machine to RHEL5, probably Saturday morning. I've downloaded and burned the DVD, and I've taken careful inventory of all my local customizations, so I think that I'm ready to upgrade. However, I'm concerned about one thing. The following web page: http://www.redhat.com/rhel/moving/ says Transitioning your existing Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS/ES/WS installation to Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 couldn't be easier. Your subscription already entitles you to version 5, and you will be able to access the appropriate distribution channels when you login to Red Hat Network. Simply download the new version and install it. However, if I go to my RHN page and click on "channels" for my server, there is a menu for "base channel" that currently has, unsurprisingly, "Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES (v. 4 for AMD64/Intel EM64T) [no change]" but there's nothing else on that menu! I assumed that after I upgraded the software using the DVD, I would connect to RHN, change my base subscription to RHEL5 and use up2date to download all the patches. However, I can see no way to change my base subscription to RHEL5. Is that somehow automatic with the upgrade, or am I missing something? Thanks, Scott -- Scott D. However, ours no longer have access to an Internet connection. 1. I'm sure it will be a bit more difficult. I'm just wondering if it is possible to "upgrade" (using the install DVD) without having to completely re-install everything. 2. Another question that occurs to me is how RHN will treat the upgrade in terms of subscription entitlements. Will the new RHEL 5 "Advanced Platform" (AP) servers be allowed to create unlimited Virtual Machine guests? The Red Hat web site seems to suggest that it will suffer the same limit (only 4 instances) as the much cheaper "Desktop" product. This hardly seems appropriate! Scott: If you click the main "Channels" link on the top, red RHN bar, you'll see the "Full Software Channel List" page. Just above your current base channel list you should see a drop-down list entitled "Filter by Product Channel". If you expand that list you should see the other channels to which you are entitled. You can then select an optional version and/or architecture. This should give you the full list of software to which you are entitled. Cal Webster On Thu, 2008-01-24 at 17:09 -0500, Scott D. I got evaluvatoin license for AS 4.6and downloaded the DVD based iso for x86. Based on this I thought that it should work on AMD too. Now is there a way I can find out exactly for which "hardware" the installation failed. Could it be because of RAM size or cache size or vga ? What are the other types of checks that the instalation software makes to determine hardware compatibility. The system I am installing AS 4.6 is not a high end machine and its required for experimentation. I looked at the hardware compatibility list but I was unable to conclusive. Hi Phani, This list is intended for issues related to the Red Hat Network (RHN) and that may be why no one has replied to this question. There are other lists related to installation and RHEL4 which would probably be more appropriate places to ask. Installations can fail for many reasons and usually the reason is fairly obvious from the messages ... can you switch virtual consoles during the install and check for messages on those relating to the failure? Low amounts of memory can certainly cause anaconda to fail. How much memory do you have? It seems it requires the development library for gtk2, so please install gtk2-devel (RHEL5 has gtk2-devel-2.10.4-16.el5), which will get you here: $ python setup.py build Can't find libgnomecanvas-2.0! Version 2.6 or later required To fix this, install the libgnomecanvas-devel package, which will get you to: $ python setup.py build Can't find pygtk-2.0! Version 2.6 or later required Then install pygtk2-devel, then ImageMagick-devel. It will then stop complaining, but linking will fail if you don't install lapack-devel. Once lapack-devel is installed, it will compile (at least it does on my workstation, which has RHEL5 x86_64 installed, but is currently running Mandriva 2008.0 x86_64). > And furthermore this package is supported by RHLE Which package?
