Printer == black hole

Hi all. I have a Canon BJC-1000 which I tried to install with
printconf-gui. It didn't work, so I tried to cat something >/dev/lp0 --
that didn't work either. The kernel detects the parallel port. See this
line from /var/log/messages:

Jul  3 00:30:11 localhost kernel: parport0: PC-style at 0x378
[PCSPP,TRISTATE]
Jul  3 00:30:11 localhost kernel: lp0: using parport0 (polling).
Jul 3 00:30:11 localhost modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module
char-major-180Jul  3 00:30:12 localhost last message repeated 3 times

And lpd seems to be OK too:

[jcastro jchome jcastro]$ ps ax | grep lpd
  571 ?        S      0:00 lpd Waiting

Any clues? The printer works OK if I boot Windows 98.
