Read the man page for less.

setenv LESS=--no-init  (for tcsh) or
export LESS=--no-init  (for bash)

in you startup files (.tcshrc or .bashrc)
will make this the default.

Another option you might like is --quite-at-eof
or --QUIT-AT-EOF
