Upgrade (rpm -Uvh <packages>) the initscripts, modutils, SysVinit, then
upgrade kernel headers, doc, source,
then INSTALL (rpm -ivh) the kernel and kernel-smp rpm's, then update your
lilo or grub to boot the right
image making sure your /boot has the correct image and links point to the
right kernel version, then make
a new bootdisk.  See the kernel-errata updates page on redhat site, but
that's it in a nutshell.
