Hi Mark,

I don't know if you have looked at this already but I had some weird behavior when running spacewalk on my VMware test server and it seemed related to time. See

I would recommend checking the virtual guest system time very regularly (at least once a minute) and setting it appropriately, 
also in my case (64bit Centos 5.2) I added the following to my kernel boot line:
notsc divider=10
